Coming of Age

Coming of age ceremonies are taken more serious in the tribes we studied about. The ceremonies are much harsher. The men have to hunt and prove that they are ready to be men. The coming of age ceremony for Masai people is a very important but in western culture it isn't. I think there is really no point in making people suffer so much.

Eddie brought a saxophone to the house for Bud.

The guest bedroom Bud was staying in was his mother’s room when she was a little girl.

Bud discovered a rock collection in the glove compartment of Mr. Calloway’s Packard. The rocks had writing on them and numbers just like the rocks buds mom gave him.

Mr. Calloway didn’t visit his daughter Angela and grandson Bud because Mr. Calloway didn’t know about Bud. Bud’s mom ran away and Mr. Calloway didn’t know where she was.

Angela, Mr. Calloway’s daughter ran away because Mr. Calloway was hard on her and kept pushing her to be the first Calloway to get schooling all the way till collage.

Mr. Calloway was so stubborn in accepting Bud because Mr. Calloway thought Bud was trying to fool everyone. Mr. Calloway thought Bud was a liar. I think the relationship between Bud and Mr. Calloway will change because when Bud went to cheek on Mr. Calloway, Mr. Calloway tried to apologize to Bud.

Bud Not Buddy chapters 15-16

Bud thinks the room he is sleeping in used to be a dead girl’s room because there were girl’s clothes and toys in the room. Miss Thomas said that the girl who lived in the room is gone and one of Buds rules is when grown ups say someone is gone they mean they are dead.

I do not think Herman E. Calloway is happy to have Bud at his home because when Herman E. Calloway came in to Buddy’s room he said “You’ve got the rest of them fooled but not me. There is something about you I don’t like. I am going to find out what your game is and believe you me, scamp, you’re going back where you belong.

Miss Thomas says “I can’t believe you, you’ll take care of any stray dog wandering though this neighborhood, but when it comes to a child all of a sudden you have no sympathy.” She says this to Herman E. Calloway and she is talking about Bud. Herman E. Calloway wants Bud to leave but Miss Thomas wants him to stay.

Eddie asks Bud if he is attacked to his suitcase or the things inside it because he doesn’t want Bud to carry around his suitcase with him when he is travelling with the band because they are known as a classy band. Eddie thinks Bud’s suitcase doesn’t look classy. He gives bud his old saxophone case.

The band members gave Bud the name “Sleepy Labone” because Bud is really skinny. Bone is French is Labone and he slept in till twelve thirty that day, so they called him Sleepy Labone.

Masai tribe

Something I found interesting about the Masai tribe was the initiation ceremony. After the initiation ceremony boys and girls are recognized as men and women. The boys shave their heads and are circumcised. The women can get married and the men become junior warriors.

While I was listening to other people’s interviews I realized that there are a lot of differences and similarities between adolescence now and adolescence then.
When my dad was a kid he spent a lot more time outside. Kids back then were a lot more active. Technology has advanced and kids spend a lot more time on computers or watching TV. Today kids spend more time indoors. Also is seems like they had a lot more freedom when they were younger. Parents were stricter but the kids had more freedom. Today parents are less strict and the kids have less freedom. There are also similarities. When the parents or grandparent’s were are age they felt the same way during adolescence. Adolescence is a stressful time.

FRIM

While we were at FRIM we were around people all day. It made me feel uncomfortable at times to be around people all day because there was no privacy. Being with the same people all the time made it easier for me to get mad at them. I realized that I got mad at my friends constantly for no reason. At night while I was in my tent I got really mad at my tent partner when she got to close to me or was breathing to hard. During the day when anyone would come into my tent I would scream at them. I hated when other people ate in my tent or even sat in it. During this trip I was very stressful. I am glad it is over now.

The qoute "You Can't Direct the Wind but You Can Adjust the Sails" means you can't control your life but you can control the direction your life goes in by the decisions you make.
